POPCORN!
by Laura
You're sitting down to watch your favorite DVD or TV show at home.
What favorite salty snack do you reach for? POPCORN! Now, before you say
it's unhealthy, consider this: popcorn is a whole grain, and a great source of fiber.
And you don't necessarily have to cover it with butter and salt.
So - join us as a group of kids and moms take 5 microwave brands to the ultimate munching test!
The results surprised us: the least expensive variety was voted the tastiest,
while the healthiest varieties were voted least likely to tempt our tastebuds.
How did the Organics brand rate? Reviews were mixed: about half of the tasters loved it,
while the other half remained unimpressed. The texture was distinctive: crisp and crunchy.
And the color was the most vivid of all varieties; a bright orange-yellow.
So, for my vote, the Organics brand, rated 2nd for healthiness and 3rd for overall taste, is the one I'm going to keep in my pantry.

Most Healthy:
It's not surprising that the two "healthy" varieties, well, were...
We wish we could also say that they were tasty, though. Overall, they were both rather dry and flavorless.
Neither bowl was finished by our tasters.
Most Tasty:
On the other hand, THIS bowl was empty in record time!
Some tasters found it on the salty side, but the strong butter flavor was undeniable, and had the kids licking their chops.
Lowest Price:
Let's face it: popcorn in general isn't that expensive. But, at less than 10 cents per ounce,
Jolly Time is definitely a mega-bargain.
Methodology:
This one's pretty simple. We got together a group of 7 kids and moms,
turned on the microwave, and got our snack on! Answers shown on the report are an average of all tasters' scores.
To keep the playing field fairly level, we tried only "butter-flavored" varieties, and didn't add anything to the bag.
However, there plenty of other flavors for you to try; keep reading!
Other Notes:
Watch that Popping Time!! While some bags recommend as many as 4 minutes,
we found that 2 and a half was usually plenty with our microwave. Popping longer than 3
generally caused burning, and you know how that goes: burn one kernel, and the
whole bag (not to mention the whole kitchen!) stinks - yuk!
Also, while WE didn't try any unusual varieties, that doesn't mean that you
shouldn't be adventurous if plain butter makes you yawn.
We found out that you can buy all kinds of varieties of microwave popcorn these days:
from Kettle Corn to Caramel Corn to Cinnamon Butter.
Or, if you're more the DIY type, you can take your regular plain variety and add nuts (peanuts or almonds are favorites),
or toffee a la Cracker Jack.
For a sweet treat, try drizzling marshmallow creme on top, or melted chocolate, shredded coconut and raisins.
One website even recommends adding sliced olives, green chilies, and shredded cheddar cheese for an unusual southwest touch.
Bon appetit!
